Jawai is not a national park. It is a stretch of granite hills in Pali district where around sixty leopards live among Rabari herding families who have never fenced them out — one of the strangest and most successful pieces of coexistence anywhere in India. The sighting rates are among the highest in the country.
Two drives is the right number: an evening drive on arrival and a morning drive at first light, when the cats move. You are picked up in Udaipur, driven the three hours out, and back by early afternoon the next day. Both safaris are in an open 4×4 with a naturalist.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1
Into Leopard Country
Pick-up in Udaipur after breakfast and the drive north-west to Jawai — around 150 km, three to three and a half hours. Check in, rest, and out on the evening safari as the light goes long.
- Drive: Udaipur → Jawai — About 3–3.5 hours through the Aravalli foothills. Jawai sits in Pali district, on the road between Udaipur and Jodhpur.
- Check-in at camp — Into your resort or tented camp. The afternoon is yours — most camps have a pool and a shaded deck.
- Evening Leopard Safari — Out in an open 4×4 with a naturalist, into the granite hills. Jawai's leopards live directly above villages that have never lost a child to them — one of the strangest and best wildlife stories in India. Around 2.5 hours.
- Jawai Bandh — The dam below the hills — marsh crocodiles in the water, flamingos and pelicans in winter, and a very good sunset.
- Dinner at camp — Dinner and overnight at the camp, with a bonfire in the cooler months.
Day 2
Morning Safari & Return
The morning drive is the one that finds leopards. An early start, back for breakfast, then the road home to Udaipur.
- Morning Leopard Safari — Out before sunrise with tea. First light on the granite is when the cats move — this is the drive with the best odds. Around 2.5 hours.
- Rabari villages — The herding families who have shared these hills with the leopards for generations. A short, respectful stop — not a staged performance.
- Breakfast & check-out — Back to camp to eat and pack.
- Drive: Jawai → Udaipur — About 3–3.5 hours, back in Udaipur by early afternoon.
- Drop in Udaipur — To your hotel, the railway station or the airport.

Good to know
- The order of stops may be adjusted for traffic, weather and monument timings — the route is planned for comfort, not a rigid clock.
- 3-star and 4-star hotels and daily breakfast are included as standard. Lunches and dinners are not, unless listed under inclusions.
- Leopards are wild. Sightings at Jawai are among the most reliable in India, but nobody can promise one — and any operator who does is selling you something they don't have.
- Safaris run at fixed morning and evening times, so Day 1 and Day 2 are timed around them. The morning drive means an early start.
- Carry neutral colours, a jacket for the open jeep at dawn, and binoculars if you have them. Camps are comfortable and most have a pool.
- October to March is the best window. Jawai is open year-round, unlike the national parks.
- Tell us your onward train, bus or flight timing and we will re-order the final day so nothing is rushed.

Common questions
Will we definitely see a leopard?
No one can promise that, and anyone who does is selling you something they don’t have. Jawai’s sighting rates are among the highest in India — around sixty leopards in a small area of granite hills — but they are wild animals.
Are the safaris included?
Yes. Both drives, the open 4×4, the naturalist and the permits are included. Extra drives can be added at cost.
Can the itinerary be customised?
Yes — this is a starting point. Add a night, swap a stop, or extend the route. Tell us what you’d like and we’ll adjust the plan.
Are hotels included?
Yes. Hotels are included as standard, on twin-sharing basis, with daily breakfast. You choose the category at booking and we’ll show you options at different price points.
When is the best time to do this trip?
October to March has the most comfortable weather. The trip runs year-round; in summer we plan early starts to avoid the midday heat.
